The National Gallery of Canada announced calls for applications for the Rodger and Joann McLennan Canadian War Art Research Fellowship and the Research Fellowship in Photography.
Canadian War Art Research Fellowship Overview
The National Gallery of Canada’s Canadian War Art Research Fellowship encourages and supports advanced research in Canadian and Indigenous Canadian war and military art. Research must relate to any aspect of Canadian war or military art, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking and other media, and emphasize the use and investigation of the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Canadian War Museum, and Library and Archives Canada. The Fellowships supports original research by scholars undertaking publishing, exhibition, and thesis and dissertation work or their equivalents in Canadian war or military art.
Research Fellowship in Photography Overview
The National Gallery of Canada’s Research Fellowship in Photography welcomes researchers from all cultural and educational backgrounds who are passionate about exploring, researching, and questioning photography’s history and current role in contemporary life. The Research Fellowship in Photography encourages and supports an interdisciplinary approach to photography and lens-based culture in general. It welcomes critical analysis of the diverse photograph collections housed at the National Gallery of Canada, especially with respect to the role of images in colonization, diaspora, nationalism and globalization. We value Indigenous perspectives into photography’s role in decolonization in addition to applications that explore the medium’s capacity to engage with diversity and changing notions of identity, sexuality, and gender. As well, we encourage research into and critique of the cultural and museological processes that support photography, in both its material and virtual form, and how these could be reconsidered, especially in terms of collection and display.
Eligibility
The Fellowships are open to art or photography historians, curators, critics, conservators, graduate students and independent and other professionals working in the visual arts or in museology and related disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, and are open to international applicants.
Application Deadline: June 9, 2024, 11:59 PM EST
