Charity Insights Canada Project (CICP) released the results of a recent survey which explored uncompensated overtime labour in the nonprofit sector. Charity Insights Canada Project asked organizations where unpaid work is most common, why staff work beyond their paid hours, and what steps organizations are taking to address or avoid the issue.  The survey aimed to complement some of the existing CICP findings from 2024 (see CICP survey no. 2.03.07), which found that nearly 55% of charities across Canada have staff providing uncompensated labour. 

Survey Highlights: 

Where Uncompensated Overtime is Most Common: 

• Fundraising activities (31%) 
• Communications (22%) 
• Program/service delivery (20%) 

Why Staff Work Uncompensated Overtime: 

• Commitment to the mission and beneficiaries (58%) 
• Insufficient staff or resources (54%) 
• Budget constraints (50%) 

How Organizations Are Addressing the Issue: 

• 63% have implemented flexible work arrangements
• 36% promote work-life balance initiatives
• 34% have adjusted workloads or expectations

How Organizations Avoid Uncompensated Overtime: 

• 61% offer flexible work arrangements and benefits
• 46% rely on interns, volunteers, or contractors for extra support
• 41% regularly review workload distribution and adjust staffing levels as needed and encourage delegation and teamwork
