The latest report published by the Charity Insights Canada Project (CICP), Spending Pressures in the Sector: What Charities Need Now, showcases data and insights into how charities spend their budgets and where funding falls short. The survey data is based on the CICP’s weekly survey of hundreds of charities from across Canada.
Key Research Findings
- Nearly half (47%) of total charity spending goes to staff salaries and benefits, on average.
- Only 2% is spent on professional development and training, on average.
- 59% say staff compensation is underfunded relative to its importance or need.
- When asked where they would spend a 10% boost in unrestricted funds, 44% again chose staff salaries and benefits (more than any other option).
Looking to the year ahead, charities anticipate needing to spend more on:
- Staff compensation (44%)
- Programming and service delivery (21%)
- Fundraising and outreach (18% combined)
