Food Banks Canada released the  Poverty in Canada: Through a Deprivation Lens Report, published with the support of the Maple Leaf Centre for Food Security and Maytree, which provides insights into the extent of poverty in Canada. The report delves into the Material Deprivation Index, which is an alternative approach to measuring a household’s standard of living by assessing the goods or services the household has or has access to and the activities in which it participates. The research sought to answer the question, “Could this alternative way of measuring poverty help explain the gap between the Market Basket Measure and the experience of food banks across Canada?” To answer this question, in collaboration with the Maple Leaf Centre for Food Security and Maytree, Food Banks Canada initiated a project to develop and apply a Material Deprivation Index in Canada. Evironics Institute for Survey Research was commissioned to execute a two-phase survey of Canadian residents. Based on the research conducted, poverty may be more extensive than appears, when solely viewed through a Market Basket Measure lens. Food Banks Canada notes that there is an opportunity for a more accurate understanding of poverty by applying the Material Deprivation Index lens.
