Community Food Centres Canada launched Food Security Now, a comprehensive digital resource providing data on poverty and food insecurity across Canada. Nearly 1 in 4 Canadians experience food insecurity, which disproportionately impacts Indigenous and racialized peoples, people with disabilities, immigrants, renters, and single people aged 18 to 64 who are living alone. Community Food Centres Canada compiled key statistics surrounding poverty and food insecurity based on region. Food Insecurity Now highlights the population groups most affected and includes data about income and housing affordability.

  • Poverty affects some population groups more than others. For some groups, the poverty rate is higher than the poverty rates for the riding and province/territory.
  • Many people live in unsuitable, inadequate, or unaffordable housing.
  • While the high food insecurity rate is for the whole province/territory, there are similar food insecurity challenges in this riding.
  • Targeted income supports are needed to address poverty, food insecurity, and housing affordability.
