Statistics Canada released the results of the Canadian Social Survey, which found that half of racialized individuals have experienced discrimination or unfair treatment in the past five years. Over half of racialized people aged 15 years and older, from 2021 to 2024, reported experiencing discrimination or unfair treatment within the five years prior to completing the survey. According to the report, this figure was nearly double the proportion reported by non-racialized people (27%). The higher prevalence was perceived to be largely motivated by race or ethnicity, with discrimination based on race being the primary perception (66%), followed by discrimination due to ethnicity or culture (49%), accent (28%), and language (27%). The study also found that discrimination is more common among other marginalized groups, such as 2SLGBTQ+ populations (61%), Indigenous people (46%), and people with a disability (44%). According to the survey, the work environment is the most common instance where discrimination is reported (41%), followed by stores, banks, or restaurants (33%) and public areas (29%).
