Statistics Canada released the latest data on commuting in Canada, which found that as of May 2024, 16.5 million people in Canada commute to work. This marks a 3.7% increase in the number of commuters in comparison to May of 2023, which was likely in part driven by employment growth (1.9%) and the volume of people working at locations outside of their homes. Employees who work most of their hours at home are not included in the commuter data.

According to Statistics Canada, commuting not only has its financial costs, it can also be associated with negative health outcomes and challenges maintaining work-life balance. The research found that the proportion of employed Canadians primarily working from home has fallen since May 2021 – however, the data found that the proportion of people working primarily from home remains more than twice as high as pre-pandemic. The proportion of public transit commuters is still below pre-pandemic levels, and over 80% of commuters travel by vehicle. Notably, the average commuting time has returned to pre-pandemic levels.
